–José Alejandrino to Apolinario Mabini, Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral |
General José Alejandrino is the Secretary of War[1] and the former Secretary of Agriculture and Industry of the First Philippine Republic. He is a general of the Philippine Revolutionary Army and a close ally of Gen. Antonio Luna during the Philippine-American War.[2]
Biography[]
Background[]
Alejandrino was born in a prominent family, who pursued a degree in engineering. He cited himself as one of the people who rose quickly into ranks due to their ties to people in power; admitting that he had not been into even one battle, he was promoted to the rank of general.[1]
Heneral Luna[]
During a Cabinet meeting in Bulacan, during the advancement of American forces in the Philippines, General Alejandrino voiced out his support with General Luna's suggestion of storming Manila and Intramuros to rapidly drive out the American forces before anything else escalate. He refuted Pedro Paterno's claim that the Americans shall help them in driving out Spanish forces in the country similar to what happened to Cuba, asking why the Americans, if their intention is to really help the Filipinos, have not joined them in their struggle and have been preventing them from entering Intramuros. Later, when one of President Emilio Aguinaldo's aides delivered a message to him stating the fall of Sta. Mesa and other nearby towns such as San Juan, Paco, and Pandacan, he left the Cabinet with Luna and his other aides.
Later, Alejandrino informed Luna that he had three platoons of soldiers ready at Bulacan, but Colonel Paco Román stated that they are needed as soon as possible. Luna left the camp to Alejandrino in order to catch a train for the troops he will gather.
At another Cabinet meeting, Alejandrino was among the members who believed that agreeing to the Schurman Commission that was informed to them by Felipe Buencamino was synonymous to treason. When Luna and Buencamino broke into a furious fight, Alejandrino was one of Luna's aides who arrested Pedro Paterno as ordered by Luna.
After the deaths of Luna and Román, President Aguinaldo tracked Alejandrino and his troops, part of Aguinaldo's undertaking of looking for the closest allies of the deceased general, either to have them arrested, surrender, tortured, or killed.[2]
